Embracing Culture and Diversity: World Dance Party

It's always great to go back to your community and be reminded of where you came from. On November 15, 2013, I had the amazing opportunity to photograph the "World Dance Party 9." This non-profit event was held in the Filipino Community Center (located in south end Seattle) and featured cultural dances from East Africa, Russia, and Polynesia. Several dance instructors led the participants in zumba, salsa, the electric slide, and other popular dances. Over 250+ people checked out the event, with participants ranging from toddlers to senior citizens.

As a photographer, a lot of my inspiration derives from the people I meet everyday. A lot of that inspiration is also rooted in the way I was raised and the community I grew up in. South end Seattle is not the most affluent place, but it is filled with rich diversity and culture. The World Dance Party, an event that gives back to the community and senior citizens, reminded me of these humble roots. It doesn't matter your occupation, race, or socioeconomic background, we can all come together and celebrate each other's diversity.

In a society that at times look down on the poor, it's refreshing to see organizations and events that break down these barriers and embrace culture.

Here are some of my favorite shots taken during the event. Thank you Senior Services for hosting this event, and it was my pleasure working with you.IMG_6141
