End of the Year Reflections - 2016: Consistency

2016. What a year. Towards the end of each year, I often find myself and others saying, "It's been a crazy year." But I think we can collectively look back and agree that it has been quite a ride. Many events took place around the world that left us heartbroken or confused. Drawing the conversation back to photography, I realized that despite constant change in life, one must be rooted and consistent when trying to excel in a specific field.Like everything else, photography changes with the times. The impact of social media has taken this art to new heights. With the right amount of connections and "fan base," photographers can now spread their work all around the world with a single click or post. It's quite amazing. The trends in photography constantly change from vintage, to film-like, to contemporary, to majestic scenery/nature, to modern and chic. Whatever is "in" fluctuates all the time. I too find myself wondering at times how much I should adapt to the ever-changing photography trends. But as I really examine my work and my purpose when taking pictures, the theme that stuck with me is consistency. It all starts with the basics, the simple things. The same old habits that you do time and time again during a shoot, and time and time again during post-processing. I remind myself that before I even worry about what's the latest trend, I need to be consistent in honing my skills as a photographer. And that process involves repetition of things I have done thousands of times. That includes being consistent in encouraging genuine interactions with a couple during a session, focusing on composition that tells a story with each picture, being alert throughout the wedding day, setting deadlines for editing, and going above and beyond for clients.Taking a page out of the sports world, I am reminded that some of the greatest athletes practice the same old routine over and over. There's really no secret or magic trick...you simply work hard and be consistent. In 2016, there were several moments where I wondered how I can take my photography to the next level. I thought, "Should I be more like XYZ or what?" While I value the importance of continual learning, I am reminded that it all starts with the basics. Never lose sight of the foundation that brought you to where you are by chasing trends that might not be substantial. So whatever field you're in, whether it's accounting, law, programming, art, fashion, music, etc...keep grinding and never give up the basics. As we close out 2016, I also want to thank you all that worked with me. Whether it was an engagement session or wedding day, I can genuinely say that every moment was memorable. It's my honor and pleasure to have taken part in such an intimate and special occasion. A big thank you also goes out to everyone who shot alongside with me and helped me with the packaging process. Here's to a very happy new year. Onward to 2017!
