Finding Great Locations for Photos

A common question that gets asked is, "How do you find good places to take pictures?" In a beautiful city like Seattle, there are practically endless spots for capturing great photos, whether for landscape or portraits. The most "obvious" locations are the well-known spots that have consistently produce stunning images for photographers. In Seattle, some of these areas include Gasworks Park, Alki Beach, Kerry Park, Discovery Park, Downtown Seattle/Pike Place Market, etc. I've taken many landscape and portrait sessions at these locations. Time and time again, the surroundings truly compliment the overall mood of the photos. On the other hand, there is also another approach to explore other memorable photography locations. The more you take photos, you more you realize that some of the most interesting spots are often overlooked. Perhaps a jogging route has a small park around your neighborhood. Your daily commute could have a colorful backdrop for a shoot. While the "major" and popular spots in Seattle have proven themselves for success, these low-key locations are refreshing and will often have your audience asking, "Where did you take that?"For example, the following image is a shot I recently took of a pedestrian/bicycle overpass on Elliott Ave. It's a newly constructed structure and while I've passed by it many times, it never occurred to me as a location for great pictures. I'll definitely return again for shots at dusk or a photoshoot.Have a special location in mind for a photoshoot? Feel free to contact me and we'll discuss!
